The Sappi WWF TreeRoutes Partnership is an innovative joint venture between fine paper group, Sappi, and the World Wide Fund for Nature, South Africa (WWF SA).
Its aim is to foster a new concept in co-operative rural development that fulfils both human and environmental needs. This is being done by creating unique community-owned and -run eco-tourism destinations in the endangered forests and wetlands of South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape provinces. The Partnership’s objective is to preserve these sensitive biomes, while simultaneously establishing sustainable business ventures for local communities.
The exciting projects being developed under the auspices of the Sappi WWF TreeRoutes Partnership have been made possible by a donation of R10 million from Sappi. Each one promises to offer both local and international visitors a glimpse into the rare wonders of the South African natural environment, while also empowering and enabling indigenous communities.
